Health & Wellness Benefits

Health Insurance Coverage
Members have access to an extended health plan that includes hospital stays, diagnostics, and medical treatments as outlined in the OPS benefits policy.

    Coverage includes preventive and restorative dental procedures, cleanings, and orthodontics. Vision benefits typically include eye exams, prescription glasses, and lenses.

  2. Prescription Drug Coverage
    Eligible medications are covered as per the OPS formulary. Members are encouraged to confirm current coverage through the benefits portal or their carrier.

    Coverage is available for services such as:

Retirement & Pensions

Planning for retirement is a critical part of every member’s career journey. The SOA supports its members by providing guidance and access to trusted resources related to pensions and post-service planning.

  1. OMERS Pension Plan
    SOA members are enrolled in the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS), a defined benefit pension plan. This plan provides income security for members after retirement based on salary and years of service.

  2. Retirement Planning Resources
    Members are encouraged to attend retirement planning seminars hosted by the OPS or external financial advisors. These sessions cover topics like post-service benefits, investments, and financial transitions.

Legal Support & Insurance

The SOA understands the importance of protecting its members in the performance of their duties. Legal support and insurance coverage are in place to safeguard members' professional and personal interests when needed most.

  • Legal Defense Fund Access
    Members have access to legal representation and financial support in the event of investigations, disciplinary matters, or workplace incidents arising from duty-related actions.

  • Civil and Professional Liability Insurance
    Coverage includes civil litigation protection, liability insurance, and indemnification in accordance with OPS and SOA policies.

  • Legal Consultation
    When appropriate, members can access legal advice related to employment matters. Please contact the SOA Executive for referrals or initial guidance in sensitive situations.

Mental Health & Wellness

Member well-being is a top priority. The SOA encourages proactive engagement with mental health resources to support members and their families in managing the demands of policing and leadership.

    The OPS offers confidential access to professional counselling, crisis support, and mental health services through its EAP provider.

  • Confidential Support Services
    Members can access a range of private, third-party support services, including individual and family counselling, stress management, and trauma recovery.

  • Peer Support & Counselling
    The OPS Peer Support Team offers trusted peer-to-peer guidance. Members are encouraged to reach out to trained colleagues or mental wellness officers.
